Uroboro

Uroboro was the final project for the Master in Product Design at ESAD - IPL, Caldas da Rainha, developed by Marco Balsinha and presented in December 9, 2015.

It's a domestic vermicomposter that is sensitive to the issues related to environmental sustainability by diverting urban waste from landfill sites and transforming them into useful matter for floriculture. The design was inspired by the typology of trees and it creates conditions for the practice of safe vermicomposting, thus forming a living system within the home and bringing man closer to nature. Earthworms are used as an accelerating agent in the process of transforming domestic organic waste into humus.

Uroboro is a modular system with 4 different pieces of red clay that can be extended by adding further pieces up without conditioning the mobility of earthworms throughout the whole system and it uses the properties of clay as a mediator of odour, moisture and temperature.

The prototypes were produced in Portugal and have been tested in several households with families from different backgrounds (nutrition habits, knowledge on the subject). The results proved to be surprisingly positive and significant.
